New F 35 Demo Team Headlines Melbourne Air & Space Show This Weekend

Airfest is proud and honored to host the United States Navy's 75th anniversary flight of the Blue Angels this Saturday and Sunday - though if you look at it Friday you'll probably see it in practice.

Two months ago we knew this year's Airfest would be a drive-in format, but a lot has changed since then. There will now be a number of above-ground attractions for attendees to see at La Crosse Regional Airport, alongside food carts and street vendors.

Airfest communications director Dave Larsen said Tuesday at La Crosse Talk PM: “We'll have food trucks on site and some static planes, some F-16s coming from Madison. "They will just sit on the visible track areas for people to come and walk around and look at."

Obviously, the top spot in the air will be the Blue Angels, but from a military point of view, it's likely the first look at the F-35 Lightning II, which replaces the F-16. Duty.

The crew qualified for the "Aerial Combat Command single ship demonstration team" on February 29, 2020, and pilot Kristin "BEO" Wolfe will be flying and likely in the air on Thursday. :07pm

When you look at all the demilitarized players, Larsen said, the most unique thing you'll see in the sky is Fowler's 1986 Long EZ with rear propellers.

Now, many people say they don't need to buy tickets as they can sit on the deck and look up at the sky. Larsen added that you would have missed a lot if you hadn't been there.

"The experience is not the same because you're right there, you can't hear the jet engine running, you can't hear it from the top of the slope," he said. "There's a lot going on in the air and a little bit on the ground."

“Deke was at each of our Slayton Airfests,” Larsen says. “He knows La Crosse. He knows the players. He adds a voiceover to get you excited when you're on the pitch.

Airfest is also organized by all volunteers. Purchasing tickets will support participating fleets and help bring the show back the next time a military team like the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds shows up - it won't be until 2024.

This year, they will be sold per vehicle instead of individual tickets with car entry. Tickets for each vehicle are $55 through Wednesday before they go up to $75.

The crew switches to the F/A-18 Super Hornet and bypasses the F-35 "Panther". The new aircraft is not ready yet, and the cost of purchasing the F-35 for the crew could easily exceed a billion dollars.

Will The F 35 Lightning Be The Next Thunderbird?

The US Navy's elite Blue Angels have flown in a variety of aircraft since their creation in 1946, but none other than the F/A-18 Hornet. The Blues have been flying the Hornet since 1986, first with the F/A-18A, then with the newer F/A-18C aircraft that still fly today.

It's a newer relative term, however, and the Navy is phasing out F/A-18Cs as they become increasingly difficult and expensive to maintain. In the future, the US Navy's aircraft carriers will take off with two squadrons of F/A-18E (single-seat) and F/A-18F (two-seat) Super Hornet jets and two F-35 squads.

On Monday, August 14, Naval Aviation Systems Command awarded Boeing a $17 million contract to convert 11 existing Navy Super Hornets.

According to USNI News, the Blue Angel aircraft is equipped with a civilian landing gear system, a 7-pound overhead spring bar to improve close formation, oil-based smoke generators. and the team's distinctive blue and yellow paint job.

What about the navy's newest fighter aircraft, the F-35? The F-35C is expected to first become operational in late 2015.

Status indicating that at least one squadron of aircraft is capable of limited combat operations. This date slipped somewhere between late 2018 and early 2019.

That date isn't far off, but there's another reason to delay the F-35: replacing the Blues' Hornets with "Panthers."

It would be very costly. Currently, a copy of the F-35C costs about 121 million dollars. Buying 11 F-35s for the demonstration team would cost $1.34 billion, which is roughly the same as a new destroyer. It will be more cost effective to convert and get paid for aircraft already in service.

The third reason why the F-35C is not suitable for the Blue Angels? Bringing together local celebrities, media outlets and other non-military personnel on demonstration flights is part of the team's mission to help the public better understand what it means to fly. While the F-35 is a single-seat aircraft, Blues' new fleet will feature two F/A-18F two-seat jets designed for VIP work.

Eventually, there may be enough used F-35s to equip the Blue Angels, possibly early production aircraft that the Navy purchased from 2010. However, it is unsuitable for one of the greatest flight shows of all time. The Blue Angels could easily please the crowd with the F/A-18 Hornet for half a century.
